First off, I'm very impressed with your product's progress in just a few months! I demoed this a while back, and it wasn't up to speed enough for my needs. I just happened back tonight, and wow what a difference!
I just finished importing a number of AVCHD files into the FlamingoHD library before I noticed the "copy to FlamingoHD library" preference option was de-selected. So, FHD is just referencing my files, which I understand. However, if tomorrow I changed my mind and wanted FHD to manage the files in its library rather than just reference them on the external HD, is there a way to "consolidate" the media, similar to in iMovie? Reason being is that I rotate between two external HDs, always keeping one off-site for safety. So I'd prefer to have FHD manage the files, then just use the external HD as my backup.
Also, would there be a way to "move" the FHD-managed files to an external HD in the future? For instance, if I have FHD manage all my files, then I subsequently fill up my primary HD, I would like to move the files to an external drive and again have FHD simply reference the files. In a nutshell, I'm wondering if there's a way to move between managed and referenced??
I'm glad to see you have a product called RevolverHD that can re-create the folder structure. Last time I tried FHD, I kept only the AVCHD files without the supporting file structure, and was then unable to import the files into iMovie. I had to jump through all sorts of hoops to get the files exported back onto the camera (via Parallels Windows XP), just to import them again. Pain in the sphincter!! Your product sounds much easier...
Renamed External Folder
Thanks for the response. I think I've just about figured out a potential workflow (which is always the hardest part, right?)! However, I was using an Automator action in conjunction with ExifTool to rename my .MTS files based on the original capture date (the finder's creation date was wrong). For some reason, I couldn't get the action to work if the folder names had spaces in them (i.e. "Movie Vault"). The problem is, I imported the media to FlamingoHD after I condensed all the folder names to "Movie-Vault" without spaces. Afterwards, I went to change them back to human-readable format, and FlamingoHD was unable to find my files. Any way to update where Flamingo references these files so I can change my folder names back to have spaces?
Thanks.
Finding files
This idea of 'reconnecting' to media files was another thing that we've got on the roadmap. We've been waiting for someone to ask for this before we build it in.
Thats the way we do a lot of these small features. There's a thousand things we could do, so we wait for people to ask before we build them in.
Thanks for the suggestion - this will be in an upcoming release.
Consolidate movie files
Thanks for the kind words :)
We don't have a 'consolidate' function yet, but I understand what you mean. I think its a good idea so we'll add it to the development roadmap.
The FHD Library is located under your Movies folder by default. You can move that directory to wherever you like then update the Base Location (under Preferences) to reference the new location.
If you want to import AVCHD files from FlamingoHD into iMovie or Final Cut (without using VoltaicHD) you can send the required files to RevolverHD and just create a Camera Archive. This archive can then be processed by iMovie's import function or Final Cut's Log and Transfer.
