We're a little behind schedule because we've been working on a separate video project for an OEM client. The work is all under NDA, but we can say that the work is all related to H.264 video streaming, using the software that powers our AVCHD previewer. The advances that we make in our OEM work will give us a better AVCHD previewer for ShedWorx later this year.

Version 2.5 sees the introduction of native AVCHD output. This means that you can now load up AVCHD movies, carry out simple trims and joins and export out AVCHD output.

This is significant because we do not convert the AVCHD video at all during this process. We just trim the video and audio streams, then re-package the output into a new AVCHD file. This means that the video is 100% of the quality that it was shot under. No other editor can do this.

We are still testing both versions, so they are not perfect yet. If you find any bugs that you think we might miss, please drop us a line.

VoltaicHD for Mac

On the Mac, version 2.5 includes just native AVCHD output as the new feature.

VoltaicHD for PC

On the PC, version 2.5 is a major change. Version 2.5 on the PC brings the PC version up to par with the Mac version, which includes native AVCHD output.

You will need the latest .Net framework (version 4.0) in order to run VoltaicHD for PC. This is available from our beta download page.

Feature testing of the Mac beta build v2.5.0 build 818

Hello Justin,

Congratulations on the beta. I have been eagerly awaiting some of the new features offered in this latest beta. Most of my comments/queries relate to working in Native AVCHD. I am at the early stages of using VoltaicHD on Mac and have the following queries / observations:

(1) working natively in AVCHD is a significant and impressive advancement which I believe will really make VoltaicHD essential for anyone with a HD camcorder. Amongst other achievements, I have successfully trimmed a 1 min 1 sec clip out of a 20 min 32s original MTS file from my Panasonic SD9 camera. The trimmed MTS clip produced by VoltaicHD plays perfectly well in both Movist and VLC but the "play progress bar" in each application does not accurately indicate the length of the clip - VLC indicates the clip length as being 00:00 and Movist indicates the clip length as 03:18:49 (ie: 3 hrs, 18 mins, 49 sec). MediaInfo accurately reports the length of the MTS file as 1 min 1 sec. Both VLC and Movist consistently and accurately indicate the length of MTS files taken from my camera but not from MTS files produced by VoltaicHD.

(2) When joining multiple MTS clips, VoltaicHD option of "set movie file stamp to record time of movie" appears to set both the creation and modification dates of the resultant clip to the creation date of the last clip of the sequence being joined.

(3) When VoltaicHD trims an MTS file is taken is it possible to set the creation date to the date/time of the first frame and the modification date to the date/time of the last frame; for example - an MTS file created by my Panasonic SD9 with an original MTS created 4:10:15pm for a duration of 10 mins 5 sec would have a file modification date of 4:20:20pm; if I used VoltaicHD to trim the clip 5 mins into the recording for 1 min 30 sec duration could VoltaicHD set the file creation as 4:15:15pm and modification date 4:16:45pm, this would then accurately reflect when the file was "opened for writing" (at the start of recording) and finally closed (when recording ended. Manually correcting file creation and modification dates can be labour intensive so if VoltaicHD could do this as an integral part of the trimming function it would be excellent.

(4) Overlay timecode in Final Movie is a great feature which I have been waiting a long time for. Is there any prospect of the following being added to this feature:
(a) user defined positioning, font, colour, transparency, background etc
(b) user defined time and date format. I would like time display to include second, the option of 24 hr clock format and variations of date format such as Thur 1 April 2010 or 01/04/2010 etc
(c) time offset - for those instances when the camera clock was not accurately set and you want to add an offset to correct the time

(5) I like the inclusion of the Title overlay; I believe that this option currently always defaults to the output file name and only appears for the first few seconds of the clip? Is it possible for this to be expanded to include user defined text, with user defined positioning and formatting such as font, size, colour, transparency etc.

(6) I am currently experiencing some trouble joining 11 MTS files, totalling 144 mins recording and 18.07Gb of data. Either the project gets to 100% completion but the resultant MTS file is only 1/3 the expected size and includes approximately 1/3 of the original footage or the project hangs at 52% in the conversion of one of the files - no system error, it just never progresses any further (I can actually see the progress bar "stuttering" fractionally). The integrity of the individual files appears to be good. Am I asking too much of Voltaic or my system (MacBook Pro 2.53Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 4Gb DDR3 RAM NVIDIA GeForce 9400M)?

Many thanks,

Andrew

Is this the same beta version you gave me?

Hi, Justin!

Is this the same beta version that you gave me a download link for some time ago or has something's been added since then?

Thanks!

Beta builds

Hi Jim,

yes - the Mac Beta build is from 12 March. We were waiting for the PC Beta to be completed before making both Betas available for general use.

We'll have a new build of both versions out later this month.

Regards

Justin
