VoltaicHD for Mac version 2.0 release details

VoltaicHD for Mac version 2.0 is now into Beta testing, so we are able to set a rough release date and announce pricing details.

VoltaicHD for Mac version 2.0 will be released early in October, all going well.

Features

It will include:
- the new ShedWorx AVCHD Previewer
- Trimming of AVCHD movies
- Uploading to YouTube
- Sending to iPhone, iPod and AppleTV

The combination of these new features will allow you to load an AVCHD movie straight from your camera, trim it as required, then send to YouTube or iTunes with just a few clicks of the mouse.

We will be extending our simple AVCHD editing features in the months ahead to provide a simple, easy alternative to the annoying and time consuming process of importing, converting, editing in iMovie and uploading.

Pricing

We will be increasing the price of VoltaicHD for Mac by $5 US when version 2.0 is released. This is partly to reflect the value of the new native AVCHD editing features in 2.0, and to follow afterwards. It also reflects the fact that the $US continues to drop against the Aussie $ and shows no sign of rising in the foreseeable future. As you may be aware, we are based in Perth, Australia and pay all our people in $AUD.

Version 2.0 will be our first paid upgrade in the two years that ShedWorx has been running. Version 2.0 will cost $9.99 US for existing users, but anyone who bought VoltaicHD for Mac on or after July 1 this year will receive a free upgrade.

No AVCHD support in Snow Leopard

This morning we received our Snow Leopard DVD from our friends at Apple.

It turns out that, as rumoured, the shipped version of Snow Leopard is build 10A432, which was released to developers about 2 weeks ago.

The big news for us is that Snow Leopard does not support AVCHD video. Quicktime won't open the movies and it certainly won't export to AVCHD.

What does this mean?

It seems that Apple is treating AVCHD like most of the Pro video formats. That is, they rely on a 'Log and Transfer' approach where all codecs are converted into a common, editor-friendly format for editing. For iMovie and Final Cut Express this is Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) and for Final Cut Pro it is the ProRes codec family.

At Shedworx, this lack of AVCHD support in OSX means that we will now focus heavily on some simple native AVCHD editor capabilities. We already have trimming working and will have this (and some other new features) out under VoltaicHD version 2.0 in October.

We will roll out the AVCHD native previewer and trimming functions into RevolverHD and FlamingoHD shortly after releasing VoltaicHD for the Mac.

VoltaicHD for Mac performance improvements

With VoltaicHD for Mac version 1.8.7 we made some significant improvements in the amount of processing power used during conversion.

This means that while VoltaicHD is working, it uses around half the CPU power that it did previously.

On single core machines (i.e. PowerPC Macs) this should equate to a halving of processing time.

On dual core and above machines, this means that VoltaicHD now takes up a single core only, instead of two.

For most users (running Intel dual core) this means that VoltaicHD now runs quietly in the background, rather than soaking up all of your CPU power. We've found that this really does make a big difference to the whole conversion workflow, as you can now kick of a conversion and continue doing whatever you need to do, rather than having your Mac tied up.

Compared with the faster Apple conversion, VoltaicHD still takes considerably longer to convert a file, but it can now all be done in the background without tying up your machine.

VoltaicHD 2.0 - call for feature requests

We are in the planning stages for a big update to VoltaicHD for Mac and PC.

We have had a lot of feature requests from users over the last 12 months and now we're going to add many of them in.

If you have ideas or features that you would like to see added to VoltaicHD, please let us know.

A new web site for ShedWorx

We're finally up with a new-look website for ShedWorx!

We have gone with a new layout that is way less cluttered and more like the "Apple style".

Users can still create accounts and log in to post comments on blogs.

We have also switched on Forums for the site. We hope that this will provide a place for people to ask questions about ShedWorx products and HD movie editing/management in general. We will keep an eye on the product forums and answer questions where we can.

For those who are interested, we're using Drupal6, running on one of our hosted Linux servers in Perth, Western Australia.
